U-Haulin’ it and the Haul Hall of Fame
June 27, 2008 on 2:05 am | In Random Stuff |
Today is the day! My partner Jamie, myself, and our puppy Cordelia
are making the move up to Portland, OR. This morning, we’re off to get the U-Haul, and we’ll be driving all weekend. Hopefully, we’ll arrive in Portland on Monday, and then we’ll find a place to live and some jobs.
Anyone want to hire an astrophysicist/writer/teacher/Halloweener?
I’ve got a very fancy resume for you!
Although I only expect it to last about a week, I’m sad to report that this blog is going to have to go on a short hiatus while this happens. We’ll be back, better than ever, hopefully during the second week of July. In the meantime, the least I can do is offer you a link to the posts that you have decided are your favorites over the past five months since we started; these are the ones with the most views since we started. And I should thank the more than 16,000 unique people who’ve visited this website, downloading more than 40,000 pages! Without further ado, here are your Hall of Fame posts:
- How to Make a Black Hole, where you can learn what it takes to make these suckers.
- A Star With a Napoleon Complex, where a little star outdoes the Sun.
- Mars or Arizona?, where you can guess whether the pictures shown are of the Red Planet or the Sonoran Desert. (It’s harder than you’d think!)
- Was there ever Liquid Water on Mars?, where I made my biggest gaffe ever on this blog, giving the answer “no,” which is clearly wrong. I learned from my mistake, but that’s not what people remember!
- Centripetal vs. Centrifugal Force, where I try to explain to overzealous physics teachers to stop teaching bad physics. I’m sure this battle is far from over.
- The Carnival of Space: Oscar Edition, where I hosted the Carnival of Space and made up crazy awards for each participant. Still the most commented-on post on this website.
- Weekend Diversion posts: Godzilla Science, where we actually looked at what Godzilla would be like as an animal, and Are there Aliens?, where I posted a really funny Red Meat comic about life in the Universe.
And I’ll see you again when I’m up in Oregon; best of luck to you all until then!

Have a good trip! Swing by Crater Lake National Park on your way there if you have time, if not definitely hit Multnomah Falls after you get settled in up in Portland.

In the meantime maybe your website could use some thematic background music, say something like Syd Barrett’s ‘Astronomy Domine’. I wish you and your family the best.

I hope that you, Jaime and Cordelia had a nice drive up to Portland, Ethan. Good luck with the housing and job searches. Thanks for the Hall of Fame list - it will be fun to reread some of the classics while you’re on “vacation”!
